Profile

Dr. Maggie KWOK Man-ki is Associate Professor of School of Nursing and Health Sciences at Hong Kong Metropolitan University. As an epidemiologist, Dr Kwok focuses on developing new interventions to prevent non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and promote global healthy aging and longevity. She has been explicating the links between exposures and experiences across various life stages and difference in patterns of major NCDs including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression, and dementia, between China and the West. She has been applying state-of-the-art methods including Mendelian randomization for fostering opportunities of drug repurposing in both Western and East Asian populations. She is also broadly interested in life-course and lifestyle epidemiology and social epidemiology.

Abstract

Leverage Big Data for Better Chronic Disease Prevention in our Aging Society Synopsis

Global aging brings forth challenges for healthcare systems worldwide. Multiple morbidities and polypharmacy are common in advanced age. Effective chronic disease prevention has to be in place to empower older adults in our society. This presentation explores why and how to leverage health-related big data to generate findings to substantiate evidence-based chronic disease prevention. As an illustration, we will discuss research findings that harness big data including health service utilization data for risk prediction, and human genetic data for disease etiology using Mendelian randomization. This session will also address the ethical considerations and challenges of big data application. By embracing interdisciplinary collaboration, we can unlock the potential of big data to enhance health and well-being in our aging society.
