Prof. Helen Rawson is Professor of Nursing and Deputy Head of Nursing and Midwifery at Monash University, Australia. Helen is an accomplished registered nurse and academic, with a passion for enhancing health and wellbeing outcomes for older persons, especially in residential aged care. Widely recognised as a leading expert in gerontology nursing and aged care, Helen has over 15 years of gerontology experience including in aged care. Helen is a member of the National Centre for Healthy Ageing and Fellow of the Australian Association of Gerontology. She is a board member and immediate past chair of the Clinical Governance Committee for Olivet Care, a not-for-profit aged care provider in Melbourne, Australia. Helen’s current and past leadership roles related to ageing/aged care include the Australian Hartford Consortium of Gerontological Nursing Excellence Executive Committee, Australian College of Nursing Aged Care Solutions Advisory Group, and Council of the Ageing Victoria Policy Development Committee.

Using Technology to Support Staff Education and Training in Long-term Care Facilities: Opportunities and Challenges
To ensure people living in residential aged care homes (long-term care facilities) receive safe and high-quality care, staff must have ongoing education and training. However, there are challenges providing education and training in this context, including a staff group with various education levels, for example, nurses and care workers. In Australia, the predominant workforce group in residential aged care homes comprises personal care workers/attendants, followed by nurses (registered and enrolled nurses). Using a case study approach to highlight the opportunities and challenges with using technology to support staff education and training in residential aged care homes, this presentation will involve a discussion of a co-designed infection prevention and control, and personal and protective equipment training program delivered to more than 4000 staff in over 275 residential aged care homes in Victoria Australia.
